Ice Dogs come from behind to Tie Huskies
The Salem Ice Dogs played a great game on Wednesday night against the Fitchburg Jr Huskies to get one point. The Ice Dogs started off on top as Kyle Anderson picked off a Huskies breakout pass just inside their blue line and went in all alone at the 4 minute mark to beat the Huskies goal tender. The Huskies got one of their own five minutes later to lock the first period 1 to 1. The second period was loaded with back and forth high speed action until the 8 minute mark when the Ice Dogs went up by one on a goal by Zak Ray assisted by Ryan Duggan and Kyle Anderson. The Huskies then struck back mid way thru the second period with two unanswered goals to go to the locker room up by a score of 3 to 2. At the 8 minute mark of the third period, the Huskies scored again making the score 4 to 2. The Ice Dogs struck back just 40 seconds later with a clutch goal by Ryan Manning on a shot from the point assisted by Nic Jacobs and Ken Santos. And just 2 minutes later, The Ice Dogs tied the game at 4 on a goal by Zak Ray assisted by Louis Gallego and Ryan Duggan. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Ice Dogs implemented the trap and locked down defensively to secure the tie. The Defensive squad of Goldberg, Jacobs, Gallego, Zampitella, Sargent and Manning were up for the task, as was the Ice Dogs goal tender CJ Palmer to secure the tie. The game went into a 5 minute sudden death overtime with the Ice Dogs on the power play. Coach Lathem put on a power play unit that kept the Huskies hemmed into their end for over a minute, putting a barrage of shots on the Huskies goaltender. The Huskies then made a desperate play of sending a man deep that paid off as the Huskies scored short handed for the overtime win and an additional point.
