| | Ice Dogs come from behind to Tie Huskies | 02/18/2009 | The Salem Ice Dogs played a great game on Wednesday night against the Fitchburg Jr Huskies to get one point. The Ice Dogs started off on top as Kyle Anderson picked off a Huskies breakout pass just inside their blue line and went in all alone at the 4 minute mark to beat the Huskies goal tender. The Huskies got one of their own five minutes later to lock the first period 1 to 1. The second period was loaded with back and forth high speed action until the 8 minute mark when the Ice Dogs went up by one on a goal by Zak Ray assisted by Ryan Duggan and Kyle Anderson. The Huskies then struck back mid way thru the second period with two unanswered goals to go to the locker room up by a score of 3 to 2. At the 8 minute mark of the third period, the Huskies scored again making the score 4 to 2. The Ice Dogs struck back just 40 seconds later with a clutch goal by Ryan Manning on a shot from the point assisted by Nic Jacobs and Ken Santos. And just 2 minutes later, The Ice Dogs tied the game at 4 on a goal by Zak Ray assisted by Louis Gallego and Ryan Duggan. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Ice Dogs implemented the trap and locked down defensively to secure the tie. The Defensive squad of Goldberg, Jacobs, Gallego, Zampitella, Sargent and Manning were up for the task, as was the Ice Dogs goal tender CJ Palmer to secure the tie. The game went into a 5 minute sudden death overtime with the Ice Dogs on the power play. Coach Lathem put on a power play unit that kept the Huskies hemmed into their end for over a minute, putting a barrage of shots on the Huskies goaltender. The Huskies then made a desperate play of sending a man deep that paid off as the Huskies scored short handed for the overtime win and an additional point.
| | Salem Ice Dogs Win 1 Drop 2 Over Weekend | 02/17/2009 | The Ice Dogs traveled to Albany NY over the Presidents Day Weekend to play three games against teams from New York and New Jersey in just 28 hours. Game 1 was against the Brewster Bull Dogs on Saturday Morning. Brewster put up two unanswered goals in the first period. The Ice Dogs answered the call in the second period with a goal by Ryan Hockney assisted by Kyle Anderson and John Murray. The Bull Dogs added one more goal late in the period of this two 25 minute period tournament game to secure the contest. ... .... .... ... .... ... .. ... .... ... .. ... ... ... ..... ... ... ... ... ... Game 2 was against the Buffalo Stars on Saturday afternoon. Buffalo scored first in the opening minute of the first period. The Ice Dogs answered the call at the 4 minute mark to tie the game on a goal by Zak Ray assisted by Ryan Sargent. Five minutes later the Ice Dogs would get the lead on a short handed goal by Mark Moran assisted by Nic Jacobs. And then with less than a minute and a half remaining in the first period, Kyle Anderson scored the eventual game winner assisted by Ryan Hockney and Nic Jacobs. Mark Moran would get his second goal of the game at the 5 minute mark of the second period assisted by Ken Santos and Derek Brown to put the ice dogs up 4 to 1. Buffalo would add a short handed goal of their own with 5 minutes remaining to bring the final score to 4 to 2. Matt Coronis played a great game in net for the Ice Dogs and gets the win. .... .... .... .. ..... Game 3 was on Sunday against the New Jersey Wild Cats. The Ice Dogs were not ready for the first period as the Wild Cats went up 5 to 0 in the first. The second period was better with each team scoring three goals. The Ice Dogs first was scored by David Chiaradonna assisted by John McGrath and Ty Zampitella. The Ice Dogs second was scored by Ken Santos assisted by Derek Brown and Mark Moran. The Ice Dogs third goal was scored with one second remaining in the game by Kyle Anderson assisted by Ken Santos and Derek Brown. The Wild Cats won this contest 8 to 3.
| | Salem Ice Dogs Beat Valley Warriors 5 to 1 | 02/9/2009 | The Salem Ice Dogs dominated the Valley Jr Warriors on Sunday night at Rockett Arena before a large crowd. The two local teams are somewhat rivals and especially now as they battle for a spot in the playoffs. The majority of the first period was scoreless despite numerous scoring opportunities for the Ice Dogs and several for the Warriors. With 2 minutes 40 seconds remaining in the first, Ken Santos found Derek Brown breaking out of the zone, who headmaned the puck to Mark Moran breaking up the middle. Moran turned on the jets splitting the D and roofed a wrist shot by the Warrior goalie. The second period started off fast and furious as Ryan Hockney drilled the puck by the Warrior goalie at the 4 minute mark from just inside the blue line on a drop pass by Kyle Anderson assisted by Nic Jacobs. The Warriors answered quickly with one of their own just 30 seconds later. The Ice Dogs continued to apply pressure with the line of John McGrath, John Murray, and Ryan Hockney testing the warrior goalie again and again. At 13:40 of the second period the Ice Dogs would go back up by two on a show of stickhandling right up the middle by David Chiaradonna, splitting the D and sliding a pass accross infront of the crease to Zak Ray who banged it home. Chiaradonnas rush was assisted by Ryan Duggan. The Warriors came out strong in the third trying to get back in the game, but the Ice Dogs had too much momentum to be stopped tonight. Just 2:50 into the third, the Ice Dogs would score again as Chiaradonna hit Zak Ray who intern fed the puck to Ryan Duggan sending him in all alone to fire the puck by the warrior goalie. To the Warriors credit, they refused to give up fighting for every loose puck. The Ice Dogs then put the game out of reach with a defensive play at the Ice Dogs blue line by Ty Zampitella breaking up the Warriors rush, and feeding Kyle Anderson cycling through center ice. Anderson turned on the jets into the warriors zone, dropped a pass to Ryan Duggan who fired the puck on net. Anderson who was crashing the net arrived right on time to bang home the rebound. The Ice Dogs were an offensive powerhouse tonight, but it all starts with the D. . . . Nic Jacobs, Ryan Manning, Ryan Sargent, Micah Goldberg and Ty Zampitella played solid D all night, playing the body and taking away sticks and hands anywhere near the net. Matt Coronis played another great game in net allowing only one goal and making at least 20 quality saves.
| | Ice Dogs Win One Lose Two in 3 game Weekend | 02/2/2009 | The Ice Dogs traveled to Rockland on Friday night and played a solid game against The Bay State Breakers. Bay State would score first at the 14 minute mark of the first period. The score would remain 1 to 0 for 40 more minutes of play until Mark Moran broke away from center ice on a feed from Zak Ray and Ryan Duggan and went in to score 12 minutes into the third. The third period ended with the score tied 1 to 1 on what was obviously a battle of goal tenders. CJ Palmer was in net for the Ice Dogs and turned away 32 of 33 Bay State shots. The overtime period was brief as both teams played recklessly for the win. Just 82 seconds into sudden death overtime, David Chiaradonna picked off a Bay State pass and raced for the net with a Bay State defenseman in tow and roofed a backhander for the game winning goal. ... ... .... ... ... ... ... .. .. ... ... .. .. .. .. . ... ... ... ... .. . ... ... .. .... The Ice Dogs played the South Shore Kings at home Saturday night at Salem State College. The first period was the best as the two teams were evenly matched and played hard both ways with lots of high speed action. The period ended in favor of the Kings 1 to 0. From here the game went down hill for the Dogs resulting in a 6 to 2 defeat. .... ...... ..... ..... ..... .... ..... .... The third game of the weekend was in Bridgewater Sunday evening against the Bandits. This was a very well played game by the Ice dogs with the Dogs leading by a score of 1 to 0 just minutes into the game on a goal by Dan Powers assisted by Derek Brown and John McGrath. The Bandits would answer the call in the opening minutes of the second period with one of their own. The Ice Dogs would go up by one again at the 14 minute mark of the second period on a goal by David Chiaradonna assisted by Ryan Duggan and Zak Ray. The Ice Dogs would remain on top until less than 10 minutes remaining in the game when the Bandits would tie the score. With the momentum swing in favor of the Bandits and some bad decisions by the Ice Dogs, the Bandits would bang in two more quick goals for a 4 -2 lead. The Ice Dogs would press hard for the final five minutes of the game on a major power play, but to no avail as the game ended in favor of the Bandits.
| | The Ice Dogs Split with The CD Selects | 01/20/2009 | The Ice Dogs traveled to Albany New York this past weekend for two games against the CD Selects. The first game was played Saturday night at Albany Academy. The Ice Dogs got on the board first in just 96 seconds on a goal by Kyle Anderson assisted by Derek Brown and Ken Santos. The CD Selects would answer the call with one of their own just 6 minutes later. This would be the only goal scored by the selects all night despite 50 shots on net as they were stone walled by Salem Ice Dogs goalie C.J. Palmer. The second period opened alot like the first with a goal by Ryan Hockney just 77 seconds into the period, assisted by Ryan Sargent and Ryan Duggan. The second period was evenly played with lots of back and forth action and a score locked at 2 to 1 until Ken Santos scored with just 2 -1/2 minutes remaining in the second on a powerplay slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle. The goal was assisted by Ty Zampitella and Dan Powers. The third period was all Ice Dogs as they added three more unanswered goals. The first at 7:10 by Kevin Poor assisted by Mark Moran and David Chiaradonna, The second by Derek Brown assisted by Kyle Anderson and Ken Santos, and the third by David Chiaradonna assisted by Ryan Sargent and Nic Jacobs. With a final score of 6 to 1 the Ice Dogs were feeling pretty confident about the next game. ...... ................ ............. ...... .... .... ... .... ...... The second game was played on Sunday afternoon at RPI Houston. A big factor in this game was the numerous unneccessary penalties, 29 in total leading to 10 powerplay opportunities for each team and plenty of 4 on 4 action. The Ice Dogs penalty kill unit of John Murray and John McGrath with Louis Gallego and Micah Goldberg on defense saw an abundance of ice time killing penalties. Most of the 4 on 4 action was lead by Zak Ray and Ryan Duggan causing havoc up front with the open space. Once again the game was decided by outstanding goaltending. The Ice Dogs Goalie C.J Palmer did an excellent job stopping the puck, allowing only two goals in this contest. The two goals were both powerplay goals early in the second period. Unfortunately the CD Selects goaltender played a perfect game shutting out the Ice Dogs for the win.
| | Ryan Duggan Selected for All Star Team | 01/7/2009 | Ryan Duggan will represent the Salem Ice Dogs in the Empire League All Star Game being held at Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett NH on Monday January 19th at 11:00 AM.
| | Ice Dogs Close December with 6 to 6 Tie | 12/28/2008 | The Ice Dogs played to a 6 to 6 tie against the Bridgewater Bandits before starting the holiday break. The game was played on December 17th at Salem State College. The Ice Dogs jumped out first just 6 minutes into the game on a goal by Derek Brown assisted by Ken Santos and Kyle Anderson. The Bandits came back 4 minutes later to tie the game. The Ice Dogs would strike two more times in the first with a goal by Zak Ray assisted by John Murray and John McGrath, and then with less than a minute remaining in the first, Ryan Duggan scored assisted by Mark Moran and Zak Ray.The Bandits came out hard in the second period scoring in less than 2 minutes to come within one, but the Ice dogs would strike back in just 21 seconds on a goal by Ken Santos assisted by Kyle Anderson and Derek Brown. The Ice Dogs would strike again 5 minutes later to go up 5 to 2 on a goal by Ryan Hockney assisted by David Chiaradonna. The Bandits would finally get a break now adding two unanswered goals, one leading to a penalty against the Ice Dogs and another on the power play. The game was now too close for comfort with the Ice Dogs leading by a score of 5 to 4 at the end of two. The third period was alot like the other two, intense, hard hitting and full of high speed action. The Bandits would strike first tying the game 5 all at the 8 minute mark. The Ice Dogs would return the favor with only 5 minutes remaining in the game on a goal by Mark Moran assisted by Zak Ray and Ryan Duggan. The Ice Dogs went to a 1-2-2 defense to try to hold on to the lead, but it was not to be as the Bandits scored with 2 minutes remaining in the game. The final two minutes were nerve racking for both teams as both were playing to capitalize on any mistake. Regulation play ended in a 6 to 6 tie. With nothing to lose going into overtime, both teams played recklessly for the full 5 minutes with 6 shots a piece on goal. Goal tending was excellent at both ends of the ice with 41 saves by C.J. Palmer for the Ice Dogs. With a final score of 6 to 6 one would think defense was lacking, but that was far from the case as the Ice Dogs defense of Goldberg, Jacobs, Gallego, Powers, Sargent and Manning worked hard all night to keep the Bandits in check.
| | Ice Dogs Win one and Drop one to open DEC | 12/11/2008 | The Ice Dogs dropped the December opener in Haverhill to the Valley Warriors 4-3 in a game loaded with penalties in the third period. The Ice Dogs were leading 3-2 going into the third, but had to play the opening 5 minutes down two men. The Warriors capitalized twice on the 5 on 3 advantage to go ahead 4-3 just minutes into the third period. The Ice dogs were heavily penalized the remainder of the game and as a result had little chance to get back into the game. .......... ........... ........ ...... ...... ..... ..... .... ... Two days later the Ice Dogs shut out the Bay State Breakers 4-0 on home ice. The teams were evenly matched dispite the score with great up and down high speed action. The Ice Dogs scored with four minutes remaining in the first period on a goal by Ryan Duggan, assisted by Mark Moran and Zak Ray.The first penalty of the game was charged to the Breakers just 4 minutes into the second period. Although the power play unit could not capitalize on the opportunity, Kyle Anderson banged home a rebound off a shot by Derek Brown just 2 seconds after the penalty expired. Late in the second period the Breakers went on the power play but were held off by an excellent penalty kill by the Ice Dogs. The Ice Dogs defense of Gallego, Goldberg, Jacobs, Powers, Sargent and Zampitella played a great game all night. The third period was action packed as the Breakers turned up the heat trying to get back in the game, but to no avail as the line of Moran, Hockney and Poor put on a display of great passing to send Moran in on the net all alone to light the lamp. With the Ice Dogs up 3-0 Sargent drew a major to put the Dogs on penalty kill for a full 5 minutes. Once again the penalty kill units were flawless keeping the shooters to the outside, and when any scoring opportunities did happen to break through, CJ Palmer was in net to shut them down. Frustration ran high in the final minutes of the game making way for 4 on 4 action and an empty net goal by Kevin Poor on a long pass by Ryan Hockney to make the final score 4-0. CJ Palmer was solid in net making 23 saves and securing the shut out.
| | Ice Dogs Win two and drop five in November | 11/24/2008 | The Month of November was action packed with a very tough schedule against the top teams in all four divisions. The Month started off with a 5-2 loss to the NH Jr Monarchs. Next up on November 3rd was a game against Bridgewater which despite The Ice Dogs leading most of the game ended in a 5-4 loss. The Ice Dogs then defeated Elmira on November 7th by a score of 10-2. The Ice Dogs played two games in one day on November 8th, first a very well played game against The Pittsburg Jr Penquins and then a not so well played game against Applecore. The Ice Dogs dropped both contests. The Ice Dogs struggled again the following weekend with a 10-5 loss against the South Shore Kings. Next up on November 17th was the Junior Bruins who were so concerned with the Ice Dogs scoring 6 goals against them in our first contest dropped Baron, Mansfield and Federico from their EJ team to secure a win. The EJ Treo scored three of their five goals in the 5-0 contest. This was the first and only time that the Bruins have dropped players from their EJ team to play in an Empire game, so we take that as a compliment. The Ice Dogs finished off the month on a good note with a 3-2 win in overtime against the Springfield Falcons. The Ice dogs are looking forward to getting back to a consistant level of play in December.
| | Ice Dogs Beat CD Selects and Bay State | 10/21/2008 | The Salem Ice Dogs won both of their home opening games this weekend playing on a sparkling new surface at Rockett Arena (Salem State College). The first game was on Friday night against the CD Selects. The spectators were in for a thrill with this game, as the action was wide open, fast and loaded with scoring. The Ice Dogs led after the first period of play by the score of 3 to 2 on two goals by Ryan Duggan and one by David Chiaradonna. The assists went to Ryan Hockney, David Chiaradonna and Ryan Duggan. The CD Selects got the better of us in the second period scoring three and giving up only two to tie the score 5 to 5. Ice Dog goals in the second were scored by Mark Moran and Paul Burns assisted by Ryan Sargent, Leif Benner, Paul Burns and Louis Gallego. The third period of play would be in favor of the Ice Dogs as Mark Moran opened with an unassisted short handed goal just 30 seconds into the period. CD came back to tie it one more time just 7 minutes later. The Ice Dogs would go up by one again mid way through the third period on a goal by Ryan Hockney assisted by Paul Burns and Kyle Anderson. With 90 seconds to go CD pulled their goalie for a face off in the Ice Dogs end. The face off by Moran was tipped to Anderson who fed Micah Goldberg in the corner. Goldberg made a move around one attacker and seized the opportunity to shoot the puck full ice to score on the open net. With the Ice Dogs up by two with 80 seconds remaining, CD put their goalie back in net. Were we done yet? No, just 17 seconds later the Ice Dogs would score again, netting Ryan Duggan his first Hat Trick of the weekend assisted by Chiaradonna and Moran. Was it over yet, oh no, this time CD came back to score in 10 seconds flat. Finally this festival of scoring was over with the Ice Dogs victorious 9 to 7. ..... ..... .... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .... ... ... ... The second game of the weekend was on Sunday night against the powerful Bay State Breakers. The Ice Dogs knew they would have to assemble a much better game defensively if they wanted to beat the Breakers. Well, they did just that. The Words for this game are WOW WHAT A GAME. The Ice Dogs assembled nearly a perfect game against the Breakers with intensive forechecking and backchecking and moving the puck. The Ice Dogs dominated most of the first period of play but to no avail as the first period ended with no score. The second period was more of the same with the Breakers playing the trap for most of the period trying to clog up the neutral zone patiently waiting for a mistake. A mistake they were not going to get as the Ice dogs scored first mid way through the second on a slap shot by Louis Gallego, assisted by Ryan Hockney and Ryan Duggan on the power play. About 6 minutes later the Ice Dogs would go up by two on a goal by Ryan Duggan, assisted by David Chiaradonna and Ty Zampitella. With 90 second remaining in the second the Breakers would get on the board with a power play goal. The turning point in this game came just 17 seconds later when Ryan Duggan got his second goal of the night assisted by David Chiaradonna and Ryan Sargent. The teams went to the locker room after two with the Ice Dogs leading 3 to 1. The third period of play was the most nerve racking as both teams stepped up the level of play. The Breakers would get and capitalize on another power play opportunity at the 8 minute mark of the third. The Ice Dogs responded just 6 minutes later on Ryan Duggans third goal of the evening and second hat trick of the weekend, assisted by David Chiaradonna and Ryan Hockney. We are not sure why but the Breakers pulled their goalie when down by two with just 30 seconds remaining giving Mark Moran the opportunity to score an open net goal with 25 seconds left assisted by Paul Burns and Kyle Anderson. This game was won on more than just offense, and more than just solid defense, this game was won by assembling a near perfect game with every player contributing both offensively as well as defensively. Matt Coronis put on yet another stellar performance in net as Matt turned away 24 scoring opportunities and let in only 2 in 60 minutes of play and those two were both Bay State Breaker power play goals. Congratulations guys on a victory well deserved.
| | Ice Dogs Win One in Columbus Day Showcase | 10/15/2008 | The Ice Dogs played the early game on Sunday Morning against a strong Maksymum team from Rochester, NY. The score remained close throughout the game with the Ice Dogs down by only one with nine minutes left in the game. Despite extreme pressure by the Ice Dogs and many scoring opportunities, Maksymum managed to hold off the Ice Dogs attack. With three seconds left in the game, Maksymum added an empty netter to make the final score 5 - 3..... .... .... .... .... ... .. ... .... .... .... .... ... .. ... ... . ... ... ..... When Monday morning rolled around the Ice Dogs showed up ready to play with the intent to add another win to their stats. This time the game was against the Syracuse Stars. With Tournament rules, there are only two - 25 minute periods of play. The Ice Dogs struck first just 3 minutes into the game on a slap shot from the point by Micah Goldberg, assisted by David Chiaradonna and Ryan Duggan. Syracuse tied the game just two minutes later. The remainder of the first period was loaded with back and forth action and solid defense by both teams as the period ended in a 1 to 1 tie. The second period opened with the Ice Dogs short handed and a special penalty kill unit on the ice. Coach Latham planned this attack in the locker room, and if successful would set the tempo for the remainder of the game. In a brief skermish for the puck after the face off, Kyle Anderson tipped the puck to a breaking Mark Moran who skated thru their defense and roofed a back hander top corner just 9 seconds into the 2nd period. Considering this was a short handed goal, this was painful for the Stars. The tempo was set with the Ice Dogs scoring again just 3-1/2 minutes later by Paul Burns, assisted again by Anderson. Just two minutes later the Ice Dogs notched another one this time by David Chiaradonna assisted by Ryan Hockney. Two minutes later Chiaradonna adds yet another goal, this time unassisted. With the score now 5 to 1 in favor of the Salem Ice Dogs, the Stars finally added one of their own. When the team is playing this good, everything works. The defensive squad (Gallego, Sargent, Goldberg and Zampitella) lead by Captain Ryan Riley were at their best all game, breaking up plays, intercepting passes and feeding the forwards opportunity after opportunity to score. Although we did not need another one, Patrick Walsh notched us yet another goal with 6 minutes left to play assisted by John Murray and Louis Gallego. The game ended 6 to 2 in favor of the Salem Ice Dogs.
| | Ice Dogs Edge Warriors 4-3 in Final Minute | 10/7/2008 | The Salem Ice Dogs edged out the Valley Junior Warriors 4-3 in the final minute of play on Sunday afternoon. This game was filled with back and forth high speed action as these two evenly matched teams kept the score within 1 throughout the game. The Warriors scored first, only 5 minutes into the game and held this lead until the final minutes of the first period when Ryan Hockney found the twine with the assistance of Paul Burns. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie. Only one goal was scored in the second period by Ice Dog Paul Burns, assisted by Mark Moran to give the Ice Dogs a 2-1 lead at the end of two. The third period was the best as both teams were going for the win. The Warriors scored first and the Ice dogs answered minutes later with Hockneys second goal, assisted by David Chiaradonna and Ryan Duggan. The Warriors fought back and tied the game with 10 minutes left, 3-3. With just one minute left in regulation play, David Chiaradonna blasted the game winner from just inside the blue line on some nice passing by Duggan and Hockney. The Ice Dogs tightened down the D for the final minute of play to hold on to the 4-3 victory. The game puck was given to the most deserving player in this contest, our Goal tender Matt Coronis who turned away 31 VJW scoring opportunities and allowed only 3 goals in 60 minutes of play.
| | Ice Dogs Split With Green Mountain Glades | 10/1/2008 | The Ice Dogs came away with two points from their road trip to Burlington Vermont to close out the month of September, winning the first game 6 to 4 on Saturday night and dropping the Sunday morning game 7 to 3. .. .. Despite the four hour ride on Saturday afternoon, the Ice Dogs came out ready to play Saturday night and assembled another clean game with only one penalty in 60 minutes of play. Two goals each by Poor and Chiaradonna and one goal each by Duggan and Hockney was all that was needed to defeat the Glades on home ice. Assists were by Moran, Hockney, Booth, Gallego and Chiaradonna. ... ... Matt Coronis was in net and gets the win with yet another fine performance keeping the puck out of the net...... Sunday morning came too early for the Ice Dogs as they appeared not fully ready to play. All in all the Ice Dogs managed to put together a pretty good game, but the two goals scored by Poor and one by Chiaradonna were not enough in this 7 to 3 loss to the Green Mountain Glades. Joseph Aronhime was in net for the Ice Dogs making 27 saves and allowing 7 goals in three periods of play.
| | The Salem Ice Dogs Tie The Junior Bruins 6 - 6 | 09/25/2008 | The Salem Ice Dogs played to a 6 - 6 tie against the Boston Junior Bruins on Wednesday night on the Bruins home ice in Marlboro. The Ice Dogs played a clean game drawing only three penalties in 65 minutes of play. The game was tied 2 to 2 at the end of one period with goals by Ryan Duggan and Kevin Poor. The Ice Dogs came out a little flat in the second period giving up 3 goals to the junior Bruins while only lighting the lamp once by Ryan Hockney. The third period was a whole different story as the Ice Dogs came out fired up to get back in the game, and thats exactly what they did as they dominated the play for most of the third period. The Bruins had to resort to clutching and grabbing and drew two penalties for hooking and a 5 minute major for hitting from behind. The Ice Dogs capitalized on two of the three penaties with power play goals. Goals in the third were scored by Ryan Riley with a top corner shot from the point and two power play goals by David Chiaradonna. Overtime play was dominated by the Ice Dogs as the Bruins had 4 minutes left on their 5 minute major and followed that up with yet another hooking penalty trying to hold on to the tie. Its a good thing for the Bruins that their Defense showed up to play as the Salem Ice Dogs were very determined to win. In just three periods of play the Ice dogs pumped in 6 goals which equals the combined number of goals scored on the Bruins in their previous 6 games. Assists were logged by Ryan Duggan, Micha Goldberg, Mark Moran, Ryan Riley, Ryan Hockney and Kyle Anderson. Enough for the offensive power house, this game was a full team effort with a defensive stategy and great goal tending. Matt Coronis was stellar in net making a total of 46 saves. Matt shut down several scoring opportunities by the Bruins throughout the game. Were there 52 shots on net? well maybe if you count all the bad angle shots as the Ice Dogs defense of Riley, Gallego, Anderson, Booth, Goldberg and Sargeant controlled the play in front of the Ice Dogs net.
| | Solid Performance by Ice Dogs in Predraft | 07/2/2008 | The Salem Ice Dogs put forward a solid performance in the 2008 Predraft Showcase this weekend with a 2-2 Tie in their first game against the Wildcats Elite Gold on Friday afternoon and a big win Saturday morning by a score of 5-3 over the GBL Black (Bruins) to be in contention to advance on Sunday. The Ice Dogs dropped their third game on Saturday night playing their second game of the day against a fresh Hackettstown Americans in their first contest of the day. Kyle Anderson led the scoring for the Salem Ice Dogs this weekend with two goals and two assists. A solid offensive team performance added points from Jon Siracusa (3 assists), Tyler Booth (1 Goal, 1 Assist), Ryan Duggan (1 goal, 1 assist), Brendan Domos (2 Goals), with Leif Benner, Kevin Poor, and Patrick Walsh each adding a goal a piece, with assists coming from Nic Coscia, Luis Gallego, and Micah Goldberg. Strong Defense played a big part in the ice dogs stategy with a solid performance lead by Team Captain Bryan Salicco and the defensive lineup of Luis Gallego, Tyler Booth, Ryan Hockney and Micah Goldberg. Solid Goal Tending performances by Mathew Coronis in the first game (2-2 Tie) and Joseph Aronhime in the second game (5-3 Win) launched the team undefeated into the final game of round robin play. Coronis and Aronhime split the final game but found trouble trying to shut down the scoring power of Hackettstowns Westfield State College center who tallied four of Hackettstowns five goals of the evening. ... ... ... ... ............ .. ... ... .... .... ... ...... .... .... ... ... ... .. .. .. .. .. . .. ... .. .. .. .. .. ... .. ... ... .. ... ... .. .. The rinks are mostly empty, except for the usual group of parents, girlfriends and college scouts that dot the stands like chocolate chips on a bakery cookie, and the league hardly gets any recognition outside the small circle of people who truly understand hockey.
The slicing of steel through ice and the thump of rubber on wood is never drowned out because of cheers, and the path from the lockerroom to the parking lot isn't littered with reporters looking to get a postgame sound bite. United States Junior B Hockey is sort of a hockey purgatory, stuck somewhere between the more glitzy upper levels of junior hockey and the smalltown schoolboy hockey that is celebrated here on the North Shore.
Junior B Hockey may not be a stepping stone to the National Hockey League, but the Empire Junior Hockey League and, more specifically, the Salem Ice Dogs provide a much-needed opportunity for local hockey players looking to extend their careers beyond February of their senior year in high school.
The Ice Dogs, which originated in Salem, N.H. in 2001 before moving to the Witch City, have a handful of North Shore players on the roster who either joined the team to prepare for the high school season or to prepare to make a college team somewhere down the line.
"I was looking for a team to play on in the fall and I didn't have one going into late summer," St. John's Prep senior defenseman Connor Loop, of Marblehead, said. "Usually by that time you have that figured out and I think I was recommended (to play for Salem) by a player I'd known, Nick Fagone, and his dad. The league is just great to prepare for the high school season."
That's the approach Beverly junior Alex Baker took this fall.
Baker used to play soccer for the high school in the fall, but recently decided to put more emphasis on his hockey preparation because he hopes to play in college.
More ice time means more opportunity to improve on weaknesses.
"We started training at the end of August and we're skating almost every day," Baker said. "It's great for kids who are playing to get prepared for going back to high school or for kids who want to play high end hockey."
Some might question the strength of the Empire League schedule, but you have to consider the fact that all the players are seriously committed to hockey and some of them are playing in a post-grad year.
"I love high school hockey," Ice Dogs coach Mark Latham, a former assistant at Lynnfield High, said. "But high school is seriously watered down. The preps are at the same level (as juniors), but other than the Catholic Conference no one even comes close. It's a completely different level."
The world of college hockey is much different from all other collegiate sports. While some players in other sports may be red-shirted when they enter school, virtually everyone who goes to college to play hockey has already done a year of prep school or played a year or two in juniors.
Some recruits are encouraged to do both prep school and junior hockey and it's a system that isn't limited to the Division 1 schools.
"If you take a look at any local Division 3 school from Curry to Salem State and look at their roster, at most there will be one true freshman making the team," Latham said. "After high school you have to either PG at a prep school or play Juniors to have a chance of making a Division 3 team."
Baker is aiming for a chance to play in college a couple years down the line and Loop is interested in playing next year, depending on where he decides to go.
Coaches have noticed Loop's play, but their message is always about what needs to be done after high school graduation. While playing for the Ice Dogs probably won't get Loop into a college lineup next year, the system will be tremendously beneficial for the high school year.
"They've definitely told me that the age level of a freshman is not what it used to be," Loop said. "Kids are getting older and doing a post grad year. I think I'm going to have my best high school year ever because I'm so prepared. We skate probably five times a week for two hours each practice. Sometimes we have four games on a weekend. We do a lot of skating and I feel like I'm more prepared than I ever have been."
