Solid Goal Tending performances by Mathew Coronis in the first game (2-2 Tie) and Joseph Aronhime in the second game (5-3 Win) launched the team undefeated into the final game of round robin play. Ice Dogs Recognized in Salem News Article10/1/2006
Ice Dogs provide good tune-up for locals By Matt Jenkins , Staff Writer Salem News The rinks are mostly empty, except for the usual group of parents, girlfriends and college scouts that dot the stands like chocolate chips on a bakery cookie, and the league hardly gets any recognition outside the small circle of people who truly understand hockey. The slicing of steel through ice and the thump of rubber on wood is never drowned out because of cheers, and the path from the lockerroom to the parking lot isn't littered with reporters looking to get a postgame sound bite. United States Junior B Hockey is sort of a hockey purgatory, stuck somewhere between the more glitzy upper levels of junior hockey and the smalltown schoolboy hockey that is celebrated here on the North Shore. Junior B Hockey may not be a stepping stone to the National Hockey League, but the Empire Junior Hockey League and, more specifically, the Salem Ice Dogs provide a much-needed opportunity for local hockey players looking to extend their careers beyond February of their senior year in high school. The Ice Dogs, which originated in Salem, N.H. in 2001 before moving to the Witch City, have a handful of North Shore players on the roster who either joined the team to prepare for the high school season or to prepare to make a college team somewhere down the line. "I was looking for a team to play on in the fall and I didn't have one going into late summer," St. John's Prep senior defenseman Connor Loop, of Marblehead, said. "Usually by that time you have that figured out and I think I was recommended (to play for Salem) by a player I'd known, Nick Fagone, and his dad. The league is just great to prepare for the high school season." That's the approach Beverly junior Alex Baker took this fall. Baker used to play soccer for the high school in the fall, but recently decided to put more emphasis on his hockey preparation because he hopes to play in college. More ice time means more opportunity to improve on weaknesses. "We started training at the end of August and we're skating almost every day," Baker said. "It's great for kids who are playing to get prepared for going back to high school or for kids who want to play high end hockey." Some might question the strength of the Empire League schedule, but you have to consider the fact that all the players are seriously committed to hockey and some of them are playing in a post-grad year. "I love high school hockey," Ice Dogs coach Mark Latham, a former assistant at Lynnfield High, said. "But high school is seriously watered down. The preps are at the same level (as juniors), but other than the Catholic Conference no one even comes close. It's a completely different level." The world of college hockey is much different from all other collegiate sports. While some players in other sports may be red-shirted when they enter school, virtually everyone who goes to college to play hockey has already done a year of prep school or played a year or two in juniors. Some recruits are encouraged to do both prep school and junior hockey and it's a system that isn't limited to the Division 1 schools. "If you take a look at any local Division 3 school from Curry to Salem State and look at their roster, at most there will be one true freshman making the team," Latham said. "After high school you have to either PG at a prep school or play Juniors to have a chance of making a Division 3 team." Baker is aiming for a chance to play in college a couple years down the line and Loop is interested in playing next year, depending on where he decides to go. Coaches have noticed Loop's play, but their message is always about what needs to be done after high school graduation. While playing for the Ice Dogs probably won't get Loop into a college lineup next year, the system will be tremendously beneficial for the high school year. "They've definitely told me that the age level of a freshman is not what it used to be," Loop said. "Kids are getting older and doing a post grad year. I think I'm going to have my best high school year ever because I'm so prepared. We skate probably five times a week for two hours each practice. Sometimes we have four games on a weekend. We do a lot of skating and I feel like I'm more prepared than I ever have been."
